LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Tax Credit Awareness Coalition is looking for volunteers to help low-income earners prepare and file their tax forms in the 2008 tax season.
People interested in volunteering would receive training to become certified Internal Revenue Service tax preparers. The local free tax preparation will be available from the week of Jan. 21 through March 2008, at the Multi-Purpose Center in Lewiston and Auburn City Hall.
Help will be available for those who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, a federal benefit to help low- and moderate-income workers increase their financial stability. It is intended to reduce the tax burden, supplement wages and assist in the welfare-to-work transition. This year, an eligible worker could receive up to $4,716 as a tax credit.
Other volunteer positions that will be available at the two local free tax prep sites include greeters, screeners (basic tax training required) and asset-building coaches (training required). To volunteer, individuals are asked to contact EITC site coordinator KC Geiger at 784-0204 as soon as possible.
