FARMINGTON – An attempted robbery Sunday night resulted in an assault on a University of Maine at Farmington student, police said Monday.

Matthew Cornelius, 18, of Duxbury, Mass., was at the intersection of High and Lincoln streets when a white male got out of a small, red car and demanded his wallet, police Chief Richard Caton III said. Farmington police responded to the call at 10:35 p.m.

After demanding the wallet, the assailant started punching and kicking Cornelius, who was injured, suffering a cut over his eye, Caton said. Cornelius was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital for treatment and later released, Caton said.

Another student saw the incident from his dorm room, came outside and yelled. The assailant left with a second person in the car, police believe.

The suspect was wearing a black T-shirt, black ball cap and baggy pants, Caton said. He was described by witnesses as being about 5-feet, 3-inches tall and skinny. He was last seen leaving in a red, two-seat, car with a loud exhaust.

The department is following up on several leads but asks anyone who has information to call police at 778-6311.
