Mince meat – A recipe used by a College Street lady: 6 pounds meat, 2 pounds beef suet, twice as much apple as meat after it is chopped, 1 quart molasses, 1quart cider, 2 pounds of raisins, 2 pounds of currants, one-half pound citron, juice and grated rind of two lemons, 2 tablespoons cassia, 1 tablespoon cloves, 1 tablespoon ginger, 1 teaspoon pepper, 2 grated nutmegs, 4 cups sugar, 1½ tablespoons salt. At different times, she varies this recipe using some butter instead of the suet, more raisins and no currants and omitting the rind of the lemon.

• Presque Isle is the second Air Force base in Maine to be chosen as a missile site. Today’s Washington announcement that the long-range Snark would be installed here at a cost of $12 million followed by, in only nine days, the news that a Bomarc base would be set up at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor. The Bangor installation will cost about $10.5 million.

AUGUSTA – The Maine Board of Education today urged all possible improvements in the teaching of science and mathematics in Maine schools from the elementary to the college level. The statement followed a discussion of recent scientific developments in Russia and their relationship to education in Maine.

The proposed replacement of Maine’s forest fire observation towers by what would seem to be a reduced program of surveillance from aircraft should not take place without a full debate.

On the surface, it would appear that elimination of tower personnel would result in a diminution of the state’s ability to receive early warning of the outbreak of fire.

Aircraft would be limited by changing weather conditions and by limited fuel supply.

The man in the tower is not. He remains on the scene, able to function in periods of rapidly changing visibility

And, he need not wait for storm clouds to move along before he can scan the area for signs of fire.
