AUBURN – The Rev. Arnold R. (Hank) Hansen, 89, of 440 Minot Ave., Auburn, formerly of 200 Stetson Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Clover Manor.

He was born at Leominster, Mass., on Nov. 27, 1918, the son of Gladys (Rowley) and Henry G. Hansen. He attended Leominster and Fitchburg schools and was a graduate of Fitchburg State College.

He received his master’s degree at Boston University and did his doctoral work at New York University and the University of Connecticut. He later accomplished ministerial studies at Hartford Seminary and the American Baptist Institute for Ministry. On June 24, 1945, he married Rowena Louise Bailey.

He began his teaching career as an industrial arts instructor at Canton (Mass.) High School, where he also trained state guard cadets. He then was hired to teach at the University of Connecticut’s Hartford branch. Later, he developed a world renowned audio-visual education program of studies at Western Connecticut State University.

He completed his career in education as the university’s director of institutional planning and development, being the driving force behind the building of its West Side Campus.

After retirement in 1975, he and Rowena moved to Maine and he was ordained as an American Baptist minister. He pastored churches in Canton and Mount Vernon, before retiring a second time in 1996.

He is survived by his wife of Auburn; their son, Robert and wife, Lorna, of Auburn; grandsons, David and wife, Devin, of Cambridge, Mass., Richard and wife, Stephanie, of Poland Spring and Neil of Burbank, Calif.; and great-grandson, Andrew of Poland Spring; his sister-in-law, Virginia Hansen of Oakland, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and his brother, Robert.
