LEWISTON – Six local high school cross country runners earned national acclaim this fall while competing as the Lakers in USA Track and Field Junior Olympic competition.

Sadam Abdi and Faisal Abdillahi of Lewiston High School, Liam Cassidy and Will Geoghegan of Brunswick High School, Jason Kaake of Morse High School and Kelton Cullenberg of Mt. Blue High School began their season by competing in the Region I championships oin Long Island in New York. The Lakers not only won tbe intermediate (ages 15-16) class, but individual team members finished first, second, fourth, fifth and eighth.

Those efforts advsnced the team to last Saturday’s national final at Rim Roc in Lawrencem, Kan., where it competed during the ice storm that has gripped the Midwest. Maine’s delegation ran second in the intermediate class.

Kaake topped the Lakers with a time of 17 minutes, 20.90 seconds at nationals, good for 32nd position.

The other Maine results were as follows: Cassidy, 34th, 17:21.69; Geoghegan, 40th, 17:21.69; Cullenberg, 48th, 17:38.97; Abdi, 84th, 17:59.78; Abdillahi, 20:52.54.
