Stolen van torched in Lewiston

LEWISTON – Police on Friday were searching for suspects who were seen leaving in another car after a stolen van was parked and set on fire in an area along Lincoln Street.

Witnesses told police two people jumped out of the van before it burst into flames about 5 p.m. across from the former Camden Yarns mill building.

Fire crews put out the fire minutes later and the Dodge minivan later proved to have been stolen from a home in Greene.

Witnesses who had been driving on Lincoln Street when the van was ditched said the people who left it there jumped into another vehicle, which then sped away. One witness said the car pulled in front of her as she was driving past.

The getaway vehicle was described as a older white car, possibly a Plymouth Acclaim, police said. The suspects who left the burning van were described as young men.

Police said the van had been stolen from Forrestal Street in Greene on Dec. 4. Fire Inspector Pete Morrell and police Detective Trevor Campbell were called to investigate the fire.

Police asked that anyone with information call them at 513-3139.
