VICTORIAVILLE, Quebec – The holiday break may have come at a bad time for the Lewiston Maineiacs.
Behind the play of goalie Peter Delmas, the Maineiacs completed a sweep of their mini two-game road trip Sunday with a 4-2 victory over the Victoriaville Tigres.
Lewiston rolls into the break having won four of its last five games and trails division leading Cape Breton by four points.
Just four points separate the top four teams in the Eastern Division of the QMJHL.
Four different players scored for the Maineiacs, including Pier-Olivier Morin, who scored his first career goal after being called up from juniors for this game to fill in for the injured Stefan Chaput. Morin was a late cut during training camp.
Delmas stopped 26 of 28 shots, but was at his best in the final period when he held the Tigres scoreless on six power plays. His stellar play in the third period included a two-minute stretch when the Maineiacs were down two skaters, and denying Victoriaville in the final minute when the host pulled its goalie for the extra skater and a 6-on-3 advantage.
Both of Victoriaville’s goals came on power plays as the Maineiacs allowed 10 power-play attempts.
The Maineiacs took a 1-0 lead at 8:17 of the first when Lucas LaBelle scored his fourth of the season on a feed from Alexander Beaton and Matt Bourdeau, but the Tigres tied it at 15:09 on Toby Lafrance’s 26th of the season.
After Dominic Savoie set up Morin’s goal to give the Maineiacs the lead for good early in the second, Danick Paquette scored the eventual game-winner at 13:08.
Stefano Giliati later answered a Tigres power-play goal with one of his own 36 seconds later when he tipped the puck past goalie Peter Poulin.
Lewiston forward Chris Tutalo earned the No. 1 star with a pair of assists.
The Maineiacs are off for the next 11 days. They return to action Thursday, Dec. 27, against Moncton at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
