SKOWHEGAN (AP) – More Maine truckers are speaking out about the high cost of diesel fuel, which they say is crippling their industry.

About 125 truckers showed up at Skowhegan Area High School on Saturday for a meeting organized by a group called the Coalition to Lower Fuel Prices in Maine.

At the meeting, construction company owner John Harriman said high fuel prices have forced him to put a halt to his business.

Harriman, who owns Harriman Bros. Construction in Frankfort, says he has idled eight trucks and laid off 16 people. Harriman has been in business for 33 years.

Other truckers predicted that a growing number of them would soon be forced out of business without assistance, and that wood yards and mills around the state would start running short of supply in January.
