LEWISTON – New councilors and city board members won’t get a raise after all.
Councilor Mark Paradis, who first proposed an 11 percent pay raise for people who sit on certain city boards, abruptly withdrew his support for the proposal Tuesday night.
“As strongly as I felt about this issue, some other things have come up and I’d like to see this tabled indefinitely,” Paradis said. “It deserves to be done, and perhaps some day it will be.”
His City Council colleagues agreed, unanimously tabling the proposal.
Paradis declined to say why he changed his mind. It was his last meeting as a city councilor.
The initial plan would have meant an additional $7,655 in annual city spending. Beginning in January, people that sit on the city council, School Committee, Planning Board, Appeals Board and Finance Committee would have received about 11 percent more. People who sit on the Historic Preservation Review Committee would have received a $300 stipend per year for their service.
Stipends for Mayor Larry Gilbert, councilors and other boards will stay at their current levels. The mayor’s job pays $4,200 per year, City Councilors receive $2,700 annually, and School Committee members get $1,200. Members of the Planning Board and the Board of Appeals receive $600 per year and Finance Committee members receive $480.
