FARMINGTON – A favorite from the television series “General Hospital” will promote the Sugarloaf Charity Summit Radio-A-Thon.

Genie Francis, known to “General Hospital” fans as Laura Spencer, will tape publicity segments today for the Jan. 11 radio-a-thon to be held from the Bass Room at Franklin Memorial Hospital.

Taping will take place at Francis’ home accessory store, The Cherished Home, in Belfast, said Maureen Goudreau from the hospital. The hospital is partnering with the Maine Cancer Foundation to raise funds to fight cancer in Maine, she said.

“We decided to have some fun with it and plan to turn Franklin Memorial into General Hospital for the day,” Goudreau said.

Now that Francis lives in Maine and is raising her children here, the committee that planned the event, including local radio station owner Rick Davis, asked her to lend her name to the project, she said. Francis agreed and will make the promos and call in on Jan. 11, but is unable to attend the event.

Francis is around the age of women who often fall through the cracks and don’t get a yearly exam, she said.

Proceeds from the appeal will benefit the Martha B. Webber Breast Cancer Center and the Maine Cancer Foundation for programs and treatments, she said. All funds stay in Maine, she added. Pledges can be made in memory of someone who had cancer or in honor of a cancer survivor.

Tapings will be played on WKTJ and other radio and television stations, Goudreau said.

Radio listeners can phone in a contribution to 779-3148 from noon to 6 p.m. on Jan. 11, she said, or come by the Bass Room at the hospital to participate in other activities and contests.

Pledges in certain amounts will be added to a drawing for prizes, including two full-year passes to the fitness center and a custom built utility trailer, she said.

Contest questions will be announced over WKTJ 99.3 during the week of Jan. 7 to 11, she said.

Another romance package will be awarded to the best Luke and Laura look-alikes, she added. Couples who think they resemble the television characters may call 779-2471 for more details before the event.

Skiers and riders will continue the Charity Summit fundraiser by skiing in the fourth annual Carry the Torch For the Cure torchlight parade on Dec. 28.

The summit will be held Jan. 18-20 and includes day and evening events on and off the slopes, Goudreau said. The annual ball will be held Jan. 19.
