LEWISTON – The only people who have enjoyed a more cushy and productive December than the Lewiston High School hockey team sell salt, shovels and snowplows.
January and February are bound to get tougher. March, too, if the Blue Devils defend their Eastern Class A title or necessitate another splash of blue spray paint on the state championship banner that floats above the ice at Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
For now, however, o’er the frozen pond Lewiston goes, laughing all the way. If you think it couldn’t look much easier than Wednesday night’s 12-2 rout of Lawrence, consider the 9-0 clobbering of Cony and 13-0 mauling of Mt. Ararat that preceded it.
Hey, at least somebody scored on the Devils for a change.
“We’re trying to find ourselves and see where we stand,” said Lewiston coach Norm Gagne. “We think we’ve got a decent team, and we knew Lawrence tied a Waterville team that we think is pretty good. We wanted to send a message.”
The cast of messengers ran nine deep.
Robbie Leeman became the third different Lewiston forward to register a hat trick in as many games, triggering the red strobe five times. He joined Jordan Bourgoin, who fashioned four goals at Cony, and Jon Roy, who tallied a three-spot at Mt. Ararat’s expense.
“They just let us skate in the offensive zone, basically,” Leeman said. “They left me open a bunch of times.”
Leeman also added a pair of assists to an attack that also prominently featured Matt Letourneau (two goals, one assist), Bourgoin, Roy and Ben McDonough (one goal, three assists each). Casey Poussard and Justin Nadeau each contributed a goal and assisted another, with Devin McLellan registering two helpers and Jake Brown setting a table, as well.
Lewiston matched Lawrence’s offensive output for the entire evening in the first 30 seconds, when Bourgoin and Roy potted the Blue Devils’ first two overtures at the net. Plenty of Devils queued up to follow their lead.
“Our first line really came out and got us going,” Gagne said. “We’ve got some real depth. There is a lot of experience, but the new guys are fitting right in.”
As if Lewiston needed the assistance, Lawrence spent an inordinate amount of time in the penalty box. Eight of Lewiston’s goals came on the power play, four of those in 5-on-3 excursions.
The disparity snowballed in short order. It was 5-0 at the first intermission; 9-2 when the Zamboni made its second sweep. Sam Miller and Brock Lawrence scored for the Bulldogs (1-1-1), Lawrence with a man advantage and Miller two seconds after a power play expired.
One more league game awaits Lewiston on Saturday against Messalonskee before the Devils head to Portland for the state’s largest holiday tournament. Lewiston will face two top-tier teams from Connecticut and renew an old-school rivalry with Berlin, N.H.
“We’re looking forward to that. We know we need it to get ready for St. Dom’s and Falmouth and the rest of our schedule,” Leeman said.
