RUMFORD – It’s easy to pinpoint why Mountain Valley had no problem flooring Lake Region, 60-18, in a Mid-State League dual meet at Puiia Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

The Falcons conjured up six pins in the first two periods, leaving the stunned Lakers unable to recover from Mountain Valley’s barrage.

“This is a young team,” Falcon coach Gary Dolloff said. “But I’m seeing improvement every week, and tonight it was good to see them go out and try the things that we have been working on in practice.”

Taylor Bradley (152-pounds) utilized his energy economically and stuck Steve Achorn in 39 seconds.

The Falcon freshman nailed a lateral drop that put Achorn flat on the mat, and Bradley alertly secured the legs.

Bradley entered the match with momentum after winning the McDonald’s Tournament and being voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Sophomore Brian Cogley executed two double-leg takedowns and eventually pinned Chris Moers with two seconds left in the second period at 171. Cogley had been awarded near fall points and led 9-1 before securing the right hold.

The Falcons Derek Sicotte (145) is a senior veteran who has plenty of incentive after being a two-time state finalist, .

“Winning a state championship is my goal,” Sicotte said. “Besides me, TJ (Burgess) and Ryan (Cormier) are the only seniors, but don’t underestimate the younger wrestlers because they are coming along and we’ll be ready by the time for the state meet in February.”

Cormier wrestled in his first-ever high school wrestling match against the Lakers.

Stephen Jelselkis was strategic in pinning Cotton Abrams in 57 seconds at 285. Jelselkis sunk-in a half nelson, but couldn’t secure it, so he stepped over and settled-in with a reverse-half nelson.

Josh Allen, a second generation wrestler, stayed aggressive before pinning Sean Murphy in 1:13.

“I need to work on my takedowns,” Allen said.

“But I feel good at where I am at this point. I only weigh 179 pounds, so I’m able to concentrate solely on my wrestling.”

The Mountain Valley youth wrestlers presented Dolloff with a $1,500 check for supplying high school wrestlers to referee at the annual youth classic tournament in February.

The Falcons will be busy the next two weeks, beginning with the Atlantic tournament this Saturday in Wells.

The two-day Noble and Redskin tournaments follow.
