LEWISTON – Mayor Larry Gilbert could try to add state representative to his resume next year.

Gilbert filed registration papers with the state Ethics Commission on Dec. 13 declaring his candidacy for House District 71.

Gilbert confirmed the filing Wednesday, but said he would make a formal announcement after the first of the year.

House seat 71 is held by Rep. Elaine Makas, D-Lewiston. Makas is one of two Lewiston Democrats considering a run for the Senate seat held by Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston. Rotundo will be out of office in 2008 because of the term limit law.

Rep. Margaret Craven, D-Lewiston, also filed with Ethics Commission seeking to replace Rotundo.

Gilbert was elected to the City Council in February 2007 to finish Lionel Guay’s term. He ran unopposed for a full term last month and won his seat easily.

“I’ll be prepared to make a more detailed statement after the inauguration,” Gilbert said. Gilbert and the newly elected City Council are scheduled to be sworn-in on Jan. 7.

Gilbert is a former police chief and was head of the Franco-American Heritage Center at St. Mary’s before being elected mayor.

Gilbert said he’s confident he could do both jobs well.

“I’m used to having my hands full, and this would be no different,” Gilbert said.
