NASSAU, Bahamas – Meg Coffin scored 23 points and hauled down 12 rebounds in her first significant action of the season to send Bates to a 73-54 women’s basketball victory over Washington College on Thursday in the consolation game of the Bahamas Sunshine Shootout.

The victory gives Bates (4-3) second place in the three-team tournament.

Coffin, who missed all of last year and the first semester this season with a knee injury, made her debut in the opening round late Wednesday when the Bobcats (4-3) dropped a 61-55 decision to Washington & Jefferson. She also had three steals, three blocks and three assists.

The former all-American center scored 17 points in the first half as Bates scored the game’s first nine points en route to a 44-24 halftime lead. Coffin helped the Bobcats dominate the action inside, outscoring Washington 32-8 in the paint in the opening 20 minutes.

The Bobcats led by as many as 30 points in the second half.

Val Beckwith scored 17 points, while Kellie Goodridge added 10. Sarah Barton was credited with seven assists.

Jane O’Donnell led the Maryland college with 16 points.
