LISBON – An improperly installed wood stove was blamed for a fire late Friday night that destroyed a mobile home and contents on 79 Pinewoods Road.

According to Lisbon Fire Chief P. Sean Galipeau, Joey and Noella Byram, who were asleep, were awakened around 11 p.m. when the alarm on their smoke detector sounded. They fled the home unharmed, but two dogs perished.

Fire apparatus from both the Lisbon and Lisbon Falls fire companies responded to the 11:04 p.m. call within four minutes.

Topsham Fire Department assisted. The fire was brought under control in under an hour, Galipeau said, and firefighters cleared the scene at 3 a.m.

One truck from Lewiston Fire Department and one truck from Durham Fire Department filled in at the Lisbon and Lisbon Falls stations, respectively.

This is not the first house fire the family has been through, according to Galipeau. In 2001, the family lost their home on Dumas Street in Lisbon Falls in a fire that left Joey with severe injuries. He was injured rescuing Noella and the family dog after a fire broke out in the living room.

At that time, the couple was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and later LifeFlighted to a Boston hospital. He spent several months recuperating.

Galipeau and a representative from the State Fire Marshal’s office were at the scene Saturday morning sifting through debris.

They determined the fire started due to “combustible material in close proximity” to a wood stove that was installed in the older-model home by the previous owner, Galipeau said.

Loss to the mobile home and contents was estimated at $150,000.

Firefighters were able to save an attached ell and contents including a motorcycle, which sustained only smoke damage.

The Red Cross was at the scene and has provided the couple temporary shelter at the Chalet Motel in Lewiston.
