PORTLAND (AP) – Eugene McClure, a Maine Baseball Hall of Famer who met legendary major league pitcher Cy Young as a youth, died Monday from a stroke. McClure was 69.
After his own stint in baseball, McClure coached in Maine for four decades.
McClure was 12 when he played in the Little League World Series and met Cy Young. He attended Westbrook High School, where he led the league in hitting as a senior. McClure began coaching after graduating in 1957.
As assistant baseball coach at Deering High School, he was part of the 1983 team that won the Class A state baseball championship. Later that decade, McClure coached girls soccer at Deering.
He also coached at schools in Cape Elizabeth, Gorham, Freeport, Yarmouth and Westbrook.
