TURNER – Thespians at Leavitt Area High and Tripp Middle schools will celebrate the 100th anniversary of James Edward Barrie’s original story of Peter Pan Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12.
They will present the musical version of the adventures of the boy who wouldn’t grow up, made famous on TV by Mary Martin, at 7 p.m. Friday and at 2 p.m. Saturday in the high school auditorium.
“Peter Pan” opens in the nursery of Mr. and Mrs. George Darling (played by Jimmy Buzzell and Carlee Robinson). Audience members will meet Liza, (Sarah Perry), their maid; Nana (Morgan Hill), their trusty nursemaid dog; and their three children,Wendy (Elizabeth Sabine), John (Dustin Harrison) and Michael (Ben Dostie).
Mrs. Darling tells stories to the children at bedtime and has lately seen a boy listening at the window. When the parents leave, the boy, Peter Pan (Danni Giffune) comes looking for his lost shadow. His fairy Tinkerbell (Morgan Smith) has found it, and Peter tries to stick it on with soap. Wendy awakens to his cries of frustration.
And so the adventure begins with Wendy, John and Michael learning about Neverland and the pirates and Indians who live on the island. They fly with Peter and Tink to Neverland and meet Tiger Lily (Mary Schomaker) and her tribe, as well as Captain Hook ( Jimmy Buzzell) and his band of pirates. They also meet the Lost Boys (trees that walk and dance), a lion, ostrich, kangaroo and, of course, the crocodile who swallowed a clock.
The play is directed by Penny Appleby, with musical direction by Sarah Holsapple. Nancy Peterson is producer, and senior Nina DeSoi is an assistant to the director in character development. The choreography designed by Jerome Robbins is being taught by senior Chelsea Vincent. Margo Robinson and Nicole Daly are costume designers; Robinson is also poster and program designer.
