LEWISTON – Jumping from their car, a motorman and conductor reached a place of safety while their car at great speed ran down Main Street, crossing the head of Lisbon Street and down the steeper grade, while men on the car tried to get the trolley wire off and restrained women from leaping to the pavements. At an unusual rate of speed, the car flashed by Lisbon Street and almost immediately crashed into the Mechanic Falls line car which had just started out. Five passengers were injured, some it feared seriously.

50 years ago, 1958

WASHINGTON – Vice President Nixon is preparing to experience the speed, comfort and exhilaration of a jet air transport, a travel advantage that has been denied to President Eisenhower, at least for the time being. The Air Force has offered Nixon the use of its special Boeing KC-135, a modified jet tanker transport. Nixon is known to have accepted the offer and is said to be eager for his first jet ride.

• And now, Moscow radio said tonight, a woman in Kazakhstan has killed the golden goose. No less than 12 grams of gold were found by the farm lady carving her Christmas bird. The find in the gullet may have important implications for the central Asian area near the Caspian Sea. Similar finds were made by two other nearby farmers.

25 years ago, 1983

LEWISTON – Fourth, fifth- and sixth-grade students eating hot lunch at Montello School will be given a chance to pick what they want for fruits and vegetables during a monthlong trial period in January. According to hot-lunch supervisor Jeanne Hood, about 300 students at the school will be given a chance to select what, and how much, they want from a vegetable and fruit bar instead of portions being placed on their trays by lunchworkers.

• In spite of a decline of some 1,500 industrial jobs in the Lewiston-Auburn area, it is evident from the most recent statistics that the Twin Cities must depend heavily upon manufacturing for their economic well-being and that the goal of this decade must be to obtain new, diversified industries.
