SABATTUS – The Byzantine Eucharistic Divine Liturgy will be celebrated for the Feast of Theophany (Epiphany) at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at Our Lady of the Rosary Church Chapel, 131 High St.

The liturgy, celebrating the visitation of the Magi, the Baptism of the Lord by St. John the Forerunner in the Jordan River and the Miracle at the Wedding Feast at Cana in Galilee, will be followed by the Blessing of Jordan Water.

The Rev. Robert A. (Basil) Parent will be the celebrant. Parent is a Byzantine Greek-Catholic priest of the Diocese of Newton, Mass., for the Melkite Greek-Catholic Church.

He was born and raised in Lewiston and was ordained in 1986 for the Melkite Greek-Catholic Diocese of the United States. He has served Melkite parishes in Central Falls, R.l.; Brooklyn, N.Y.; Scranton, Pa.; and Danbury, Conn.

The Melkite Greek-Catholic Church is one of the numerous Eastern churches of different rites in communication with Rome. It follows the Byzantine Rite, the second largest rite in the church. Melkite churches are scattered throughout the U.S.

All are invited to attend the Divine Liturgy and learn how Byzantine Christians celebrate their faith. Discussion and a time for questions and answers will follow the Liturgy for those interested.

Anyone interest in the Byzantine churches or who is a member of any of the Eastern churches and is interested in future services is invited to see Parent after the Liturgy or contact him at 375-6581.
