NORWAY – Selectmen praised the highway crew and Town Manager David Holt on Thursday night for efforts to keep the public safe and informed during the recent rounds of snowstorms that have dumped more than 2 feet of snow.

“Kudos to the highway department. They have been under tremendous pressure,” said Selectman Les Flanders, who was joined by fellow selectmen in his praise.

With highway supervisor Ron Springer briefly in the hospital and other crew members and equipment under stress, Holt told the board that it will take some time before all the snow, including the medium strip of snow down Main Street, is cleared.

Holt said he hoped the snow on Main Street could be removed Thursday night, and he has gone to each of the downtown businesses to provide updates on snow-removal efforts. Normally the snow is removed within 24 hours.

Holt said he has also spoken to Police Chief Robert Federico about the possibility of towing vehicles or ticketing those that are illegally parked in order to allow the highway department access to parking lots to get the snow removed. The action is being supported by selectmen.

In other business, selectmen reviewed a preliminary list of road work that is being considered for this summer. In-town street reconstructions include parts of Green Street, Huntington Avenue, Greenleaf Avenue, Elm Street and Horne Street. Only a small percentage of the estimated $220,900 in road work will be done because of budget constraints. Holt has suggested the board look at Horne Street, where sewer work will be completed.

Future jobs include portions of Hemingway Road, Frost Hill Road, Dunn Road and Shedd Road, Morse Road, Don Hunt Road, Greenwood Road and Upton Brothers Road.

Also on the list are Crockett Ridge Road, Korhonen Road, Pleasant Street, Emerson Road and Old Stage Road.

Holt estimates that only about $250,000 to $300,000 of the estimated $833,000 in rural road work will be done this year.

The board is expected to meet with the road committee later this winter to decide which of the projects will be undertaken.
