SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – In a game filled with record-breaking performances, Bates defeated Wesleyan in the championship game of the Holiday Inn/Naismith Classic, 80-60, Friday.
Bates’ junior forward Val Beckwith earned tournament MVP honors with a game-high 18 points, as well as five assists and two steals. Senior guard Sarah Barton broke a tourney record with 12 assists for the Bobcats (6-3). Senior forward Matia Kostakis added 13 points and recorded a team-high 11 rebounds, while Meg Coffin and Danielle Schaefers chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Wesleyan’s Lucy Sprung topped her own career-high mark in points, 21 set the previous day, with 25.
The only other double-digit scorer for the Cardinals (8-3) was freshman guard Allie Southam. Bates set two tournament records.
Medaille 60, Colby 47
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Marissa Clark netted 17 points and Amanda Walling added 10 points and 11 rebounds as Medaille College defeated Colby 60-47 in the Florida Sunshine Shootout on Friday.
Katie McCabe paced the Mules (1-6) with 10 points while collecting as many rebounds.
Clark 71, Maine Maritime 55
GORHAM – Sarah Roderigue popped in 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds as Clark downed Maine Maritime 71-55 at the Southern Maine Invitational women’s basketball tournament Friday.
USM 76, UMPI 33
GORHAM – Dawn Ross and Josalee Danieli each registered 12 points as the University of Southern Maine rolled to a 76-33 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the Southern Maine Invitational women’s basketball tournament Friday. USM now advances to play Clark in Saturday’s final.
The Huskies (9-1) led 44-14 at the half, and all 13 players scored in the one-sided victory. Megan Korhonen netted 14 points to lead UMPI (3-6), with Erica Davis scoring 11 points.

Bowdoin 85, UMF 46
BRUNSWICK – The Bowdoin Polar Bears (8-2) used a dominating first half, 15 points from Mike Hauser and 12 each from Andrew Sargeantson, Tim Lane and Kyle Jackson to beat the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers (5-5), 84-46.
Hauser equaled his career-high by dishing out nine assists to go with three steals. Jackson blocked four shots, and Jordan Fliegel knocked down 10 in the win. Sean Fry led the Beavers with 11 points, and Andrew Dean had seven, knocking down two 3-pointers.
Hockey
USM 4, Colby 3
WATERVILLE – Mike Stevens broke a deadlock with a power-play goal with 3:23 remaining to lift the University of Southern Maine to a 4-3 victory over Colby.
Colby (4-4) rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie the game on Billy Crinnion’s power play at 7:34 of the final period.
Former St. Dom’s standout Jon Rutt led the Huskies with three assists. Ryan McKinney and Jamie Gilbert combined for 28 saves in the USM goal.
