AUBURN – A Wayne man was hospitalized Friday with injuries suffered when two cars collided on Riverside Drive.

John Yindra, 54, was in fair condition at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston after his car was struck head-on by a second vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

Police said Yindra was driving south on Riverside at about 1 p.m. when his Toyota Echo was struck by a car driven by Robert Blanchette, 62, of Auburn.

Investigators believe Blanchette, driving north in a Toyota four-door, fell asleep and drifted over the center line. The cars collided and spun to opposite sides of the roadway.

Police shut down a long section of Riverside Drive as emergency crews responded and rescue efforts got under way.

Blanchette was examined for scrapes and bruises suffered in the wreck. Yindra was taken to CMMC with a variety of injuries, police said. Neither driver was carrying passengers.

The road remained shut down for about an hour as wreckage was cleared and police took measurements of the crash site.

The collision remained under investigation Friday night.
