FARMINGTON – Jean Metcalf Ellsworth, 76, of Eustis, died on Thursday, Jan. 3, at the Sandy River Rehab and Living Center in Farmington.
She was born on Aug. 8, 1931, in Farmington, the daughter of William H. And Lyda (Dyar) Metcalf. Her early survival was considered a miracle as she weighed only two-and-a-half pounds at birth.
She was educated in the schools in West Farmington and Farmington.
On June 3, 1950, she married Carl Ellsworth in Salem. Her beginning married years would be filled with that of raising the eight children that she and Carl would have together. Carl died on Sept. 20, 1999.
Later she worked at Kern’s Inn, Stratton Elementary School, Sugarloaf Mountain, Stratton Lumber Co., and finally as a letter carrier from Eustis to Coburn Gore for 20 years from which she retired from in 1998.
She enjoyed feeding the deer, and her vegetable and flower gardens. She was especially partial to the pansies and roses that she nurtured. She was a friendly woman who met everyone with a big smile and looked for the best in people
She is survived by four sons, Perry Ellsworth and his wife, Sue, of Strong, William Ellsworth of Farmington, Frank Ellsworth and his wife, Wanda, of Eustis and Irvin Ellsworth of Wisconsin; four daughters, Sally Dunphy and husband, Doug, of Hampden, Barbara Dunn and husband, Albert (Bud), of Strong, Elizabeth of Farmington and Deborah and husband, Bill, of Cantonment, Fla.; two brothers, John Metcalf of Wilton and Robert Metcalf of Jay; two sisters, Ruth Phillips of Florida and Elizabeth Harris of Mississippi; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
