AUBURN – Jeannette Ireland, 83, of Poland Spring, died on Saturday, Jan. 5, at Clover Living and Rehabilitation Center in Auburn, after a long illness.
She was born in Portland, on April 24, 1924, a daughter of Charles and Nellie (Winslow) Plummer. She was very proud of her girlhood home on Megquire Hill in Poland, often sharing her experiences there. She was educated in Poland Schools and was a graduate of Mechanic Falls High School. She attended the Nazarene Church in Mechanic Falls.
On Feb. 10, 1943, she married Robert Winslow in Jacksonville, N.C., where she lived during his service in World War II. After the war they lived in Casco, West Poland and Poland Spring. Robert Winslow died in 1977.
She worked as a telephone operator at Pine Tree Telephone Co., for Job Corps at the Poland Spring complex and at the Pineland Center in Pownal. She also worked for 20 years as a tax assessor for the Town of Poland, retiring in 2001. She was presented with a service recognition award for her dedication and service to the town.
She is survived by her husband, Theodore Ireland, whom she married on Sept. 24, 1983; two daughters, Sharon Greaton of Auburn and Melody Stevens and her husband, Mark Weinberg, of Poland; her son, Neil and his wife, Joanne, of Turner; one granddaughter; seven grandsons; four great-grandsons; and six great-granddaughters.
She was predeceased by her parents; two sisters, Fern Gurney and an unnamed infant girl; and a special nephew, Richard Gurney of West Poland.
