Lea Morin prepared herself for a long awaited showdown in the 55-meter dash Saturday at Bowdoin College, but the Lewiston junior didn’t get the race she coveted. When Brunswick’s Kristin Slotnick couldn’t race because of illness, Morin posted an easy victory.

She figures she’ll race against Slotnick in the state meet but was hoping to see how her time matches up, especially since Morin feels she races faster against good competition.

“I was mentally preparing myself to race against her,” said Morin. “I was expecting to race against her. With her being No. 1 in the state last year for indoor, I think it would have been pretty good. I have one of the fastest times in the state right now. I was excited about racing her, but, oh well.”

Ray Putnam has the math figured out. He just needs to find a way to make the numbers add up.

The Lewiston track coach says it will likely take 60 to 80 points to win the boys’ Class A championship meet. He may not have the number of athletes that some of the larger Class A schools can boast, but he certainly has the talent to challenge for the title. It is just a matter of getting runners healthy and putting them in the best events.

“There’s a few little tweaks and a few little injuries we’ve got to get through,” said Putnam. “We’re in very good position. Mohamed Noor is ranked first in three events in Class A. Our 4×8 team is ranked first in Class A. Once we get (Jeff) Lucier healthy, he’ll be one of the top ranked kids, same with (Hussain) Naji.”

The first meet after the holidays wasn’t such a chore for the Lewiston track team. The Blue Devils had a meet in the middle of vacation week and had been practicing steadily through the holidays. If anything, Saturday’s meet at Bowdoin was a bit of a reprieve from rigorous workouts.

“They’re extremely tired because we worked them very hard this week,” said Putnam. “We had most of the super stars at practice all the way through vacation, but we still had too much sugar in the bodies, but everyboyd’s got that.”
