Deadline, by Chris Crutcher, has a refreshing look on life, and is unique in that way. Touching in its way, the story is about eighteen-year-old Ben Wolfe, and his death. Ben, a small, slender runner on the cross country team, finds out during the summer before his senior year, that he has a fast, furious, and progressive disease that, if left untreated, will give him only a year to live. Deciding to not get treatment, Ben signed up to do football, becoming a hero for his high school. Ben helps the town drunk to get his act together. He then manages to get the girl he loves to love him back. The final thing Ben has to do is to tell everyone that he is dying. You know his fate from the first page, but when the story unfolds, you can’t help but cry. This book is something that I believe everyone should read. I highly suggest it.
