PORTLAND – Harold D. Brown, “Brownie,” 84, formerly of South Rumford, died in Portland, on Jan. 7.

He and his wife had resided at 75 State St., in Portland, for the past two years.

He was born on April 18, 1923, in Rumford. He attended Stephens High School.

He was veteran of World War II, serving 4 years in the Army Air Force as a propeller mechanic in the European theater while stationed in England, Belgium and France.

He retired from Boise Cascade, having worked in the mill for over 45 years. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.

He leaves his loving wife of 62 years, Aurora Brown of Portland; two sons, Dennis and his wife, Nancy, of Bolton, Conn., Gary and his wife, Cheryl, of Manchester, N.H.; two daughters, Jean Violette and her husband, John, of Granby, Conn., and Dr. Patricia Stogsdill and her husband, Russell, of Falmouth; eight grandchildren, Carrie Brown-Masse of La Mesa, Calif., Ehren Brown of Vernon, Conn., Melissa Violette of Thomasville, Ga., Scott Violette of Barkhamsted, Conn., Jennifer Violette Gerding of Wilmington, Vt., Keith Violette of Sandown, N.H., and Matthew and Kristen Stogsdill of Falmouth; five great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Harold Brown; and a long-time friend, Bob Kellogg, both of Rumford.

He was predeceased by his brother, Roger; and his sister, Ivy.

As a husband, father, grandfather and friend, his greatest legacy was instilling in all of us a love of family, integrity, honesty and a strong work ethic.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The family wishes to thank the staff at 75 State St., Maine Medical Center and especially St. Joseph’s Manor in Portland for their compassionate care.

They would also like to thank Dr. Joel Botler for his care over the past 26 years.
