The Kennebec River Sail & Power Squadron will offer basic boating safety courses from January to March in various Maine locations.

Maine law requires that a person 16 to 17 years old may not operate a personal watercraft unless physically accompanied by a person at least18 years old, and to show proof of age and completion of a boater safety education course.

The squadron boating course is designed to familiarize boaters with the fundamentals of safe boat handling and operation and to be qualified for certification in most states that require boating education before operating a watercraft. Subjects include boat handling, trailering, aids to navigation, Marine radio usage, Navigation rules, personal watercraft operation, and dealing with adverse conditions and emergencies. Also covered are knots and lines, use of marine charts, piloting, and determining your position on the water.
