AUGUSTA (AP) – A Waterville man who assaulted a woman last month as she walked her dogs near the Colby College arboretum is going to prison for 39 months.

Benjamin Oakes, who’s 27, pleaded guilty to grabbing the victim from behind as she tended her dogs on Dec. 6. She broke away and hailed a passing car.

At the time, Oakes was out on bail after breaking his sister’s jaw in a felony assault case.

District Attorney Evert Fowle says Monday’s sentence is appropriate because Oakes has five previous misdemeanor assault convictions.

Two other women were assaulted near the Colby campus in November, but police believe they’re not related to the incident involving Oakes.
