He’s not the most heralded product of the Lewiston-Auburn hockey scene who’s actively involved in the University of Southern Maine’s undefeated, nationally-ranked start to the season, but Rutt, a St. Dominic Regional High School product and past Travis Roy Award finalist, played an integral role in keeping that streak alive. The freshman assisted three goals Friday in the Huskies’ 4-3 victory at Colby College. Rutt entered the game with two goals and two assists.
Women: Meg Coffin, Bates basketball
Coffin scored a team-high 14 points Sunday in the Bobcats’ home rout of in-state rival University of Maine at Farmington. Not bad for somebody who hadn’t played a home game since February 2006. Coffin became eligible to suit up for Bates over the holidays after sitting out the 2006-07 winter/spring and 2007-08 fall semesters recovering from a serious knee injury. Her triumphant return against Farmington capped a comeback week in which Coffin also made the All-Tournament Team at the Naismith Classic in Springfield, Mass., and was named Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week.
