HARPSWELL – The Maine School Science Volunteers program has entered 2008 with expanded programs and innovative modules in a growing number of schools throughout five Maine counties.

MSSV is assisting Mt. Ararat High School students with science fair projects over the course of the winter/spring semester. MSSV is working with teachers and students at Brunswick Middle School to offer a new four-week course in electricity and magnetism. Also, MSSV will conduct four new classes for Lisbon High School students in March.

Since 2000, MSSV has been helping students better understand physical science by bringing scientific and engineering professionals to volunteer in schools. Trained to support the Maine Learning Results, volunteers are matched with science teachers to work together in middle and high school classrooms.

Volunteers provide a variety of learning activities to spark student interest, and working arrangements are customized to meet teacher and student needs. Every year, MSSV designs new content modules for classroom presentations to complement its curriculum resources.
