BETHEL – The Livermore Falls boys’ basketball team made the proper adjustments, and it paid off in the second half Thursday night.

Zach Keene scored a game-high 27 points and was a one-man wrecking crew in the third quarter as the Andies pulled away for a 57-33 win over Telstar.

Livermore Falls (4-5) followed Keene, who put on a show by scoring 15 points in the third quarter when a five-point lead ballooned into a double-digit lead.

Keene began a 16-3 run with a layup to complete a fastbreak and, following a Rebel turnover, Chandler White scored. A pair of back-to-back treys by Keene gave the Andies a 34-20 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter

“I simply had no answer for Keene,” Telstar coach Mark Thurlow said. “He is a smart player and what really made them go was when Keene came out and scored a back-door layup. We made things worse because our shots were not going in.”

Telstar (1-6) scored the opening basket on a jumper by Andy Whitney (10 points), but then missed 11 shots before freshman Dan Vaughan scored off a rebound. In between, Mike Fleet and Kyle Maines made three free throws.

The Rebels have young teams and are finding the going tough in the Mountain Valley Conference this season.

“Telstar played us hard,” Livermore Falls first-year coach Travis Magnusson said. “We picked up the tempo in the third quarter, and the offensive execution was better.”

Khyle Whittemore added 12 points with high-percentage shots.

The Andies rebounded well with Rett Neal and Tom Ventrella, who provided numerous outlet passes.

Telstar shot 21 percent from the floor and made nine of 18 free throws. The game was tied or changed sides six times in the first quarter.

“Early on it was so close because Telstar was taking us away from our game,” Magnusson said. “They were switching defenses on almost every possession and we couldn’t get used to it.”

Livermore Falls shot 38 percent and made 11 free throws.
