OXFORD – Two people were injured and a Paris man was arrested on a drunken driving charge following a two-car crash in front of Hannaford’s supermarket on Route 26 on Thursday afternoon.
Christopher George, 47, of 11 Elm Hill Road was arrested by Norway police officer Theron Bickford on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol after his car collided with another at the shopping plaza intersection.
Injured were Janet Fox, 79, of Norway, and her passenger, Patrick Molloy, 67, of Norway. They were taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital for treatment and then released.
Oxford police Sgt. Rickie Jack said Fox was driving north on Route 26 about 3:30 p.m. when, according to witnesses, she started through the intersection on a green light and was hit by George’s southbound vehicle trying to turn left into the Hannaford shopping plaza on an apparent red light.
“It really backed up traffic for at least a mile toward Norway,” said Jack, who requested help from Norway police as he tended to the injured motorists and obtained witness statements.
Damage to Fox’s 1999 Ford was estimated at about $2,000 and to George’s 1996 Jeep at about $3,200.
Both cars were towed from the scene by Charlie’s Towing.
The scene was cleared by 4 p.m.
