Make that two gold medalists with ties to Lewiston this year.

Kasey Boucher, a Lewiston resident who plays defense for the North American Hockey Academy in Stowe, Vt., earned a gold medal Saturday with the United States’ entry at the World Under-18 Women’s Championships in Calgary.

She joins Lewiston Maineiacs goaltender Jonathan Bernier as a gold medal winner. Bernier struck gold with Team Canada at the World Junior Championships one week earlier.

In its first year, the women’s U-18 tournament turned into a showcase for the United States and Canada, who appeared destined to face each other in the gold medal game from the beginning.

The United States beat Russia and Switzerland by identical 11-0 scores and shut down Sweden 6-2 in three pool games, and then crushed the Czech Republic 8-0 in the semifinals.

Canada, meanwhile, beat the Czech Republic, Finland and Germany by a combined score of 38-3, and then upended Sweden 7-1 in the semifinal round, setting up a showdown with the U.S.

In the gold medal game, Alyssa Grogan made 26 saves to lead the U.S. to a 5-2 victory in this inaugural tournament. Amanda Kessel, sister of Bruins’ forward Phil Kessel, was one of five players to score a goal for the U.S. in the final.

Boucher, in her senior season at NAHA, will return for the fourth academic quarter at Lewiston High School this spring, and will attend Boston University in the fall, where she will play hockey.

In the tournament, Boucher was among the top 25 in plus-minus with a final rating of plus-7. She also had an assist for the Americans.
