New uniform, same old Maineiac-killing Matt Marquardt.

Marquardt, who made a habit of scoring big goals against Lewiston for the Moncton Wildcats over the last two years, scored three goals for Baie-Comeau on Sunday afternoon to lead the Drakkar to a 5-1 win over the visiting Maineiacs at Centre Henry-Leonard.

“We made a couple of mental mistakes (Sunday),” Lewiston head coach Ed Harding said. “We kept playing hard, though, even in the third down 4-0 we had some jump and I think outplayed them for about 10 minutes to start the period.”

Moncton traded the power forward, a draft pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL, to Baie-Comeau during the mid-season trade period this season.

“We’d done well to keep him off the scoresheet when he was with Moncton (this year),” Harding said. “Tonight just wasn’t our night against him.”

On the other end, Lewiston’s own high-profile draft pick, Jonathan Bernier, did the best he could with an exhausted team playing in front of him, stopping 24 of 29 shots in the loss.

“We ask him to make the first save, and after that we need to clean things out for him,” Harding said. “We had some breakdowns out there that didn’t help him.”

One thing the Maineiacs did contain Sunday were their penalties. In the previous six games, Lewiston had averaged just about eight power plays against per game, but the Maineiacs took just three penalties Sunday.

“It was a well-played game, I thought,” Harding said. “It was good, up-and-down hockey.”

Still, the power play unit hasn’t fixed its issues. The Maineiacs were 0 for 4 with an extra skater Sunday, and are just one for their last 21.

“I’m very disappointed that we didn’t score on this trip on the power play,” Harding said. “We weren’t moving the puck crisply, and I guess you know what we’ll be working on this week.”

Stephane Michaud put the Drakkar ahead 1-0 early with a goal on a rebound after a Jean-Philippe Paquet shot from the right point. The goal came on just the Drakkar’s third shot of the contest.

Lewiston and Baie-Comeau played evenly through the rest of the first, both electing to play defensively. Each team only took six shots on goal in the opening frame.

In the second, Bernier stared down a 1-on-0 by Francois Bouchard and stuffed the sniper, but Marquardt put the Drakkar ahead 2-0 on the rebound.

Not long after that, he made it 3-0 for the Drakkar on a third rebound after Bernier made a pair of stellar stops while on his side. Kalin Paul finished the second period off by sending the home fans into a frenzy when he took a long lead pass from Nicolas Sigouin as he stepped out of the penalty box and broke in alone on Bernier, roofing the puck over the keeper’s blocker with just 1.7 seconds on the clock to put his team up 4-0.

Stefan Chaput scored his 18th of the season just 59 seconds into the third to make the score 4-1, but that’s as close as the Maineiacs would get.

Chaput had a chance to draw his team within two near the midway point of the third on a penalty shot, but Marco Cousineau stuffed his wrist shot with a right pad save.

Marquardt completed the hat trick at 10:16 of the third with a shot off the crossbar that beat Bernier high to the glove side.
