LEWISTON – Councilors could see some new rules designed to limit rowdy behavior from bars along Park Street by February.
Planning Board members will discuss the future of bars and nightclubs on Park Street at their meeting on Jan. 23, and could have something to present to city councilors in February. The last City Council enacted a moratorium on new liquor licenses in the vicinity of the Oak Park Apartments in March 2007.
The moratorium is due to expire March 2.
“It’s a new council, and the Planning Board wants to give them some new recommendations,” City Planner David Hediger said.
He said Planning Board members have discussed creating a ban on Class A lounges for the area that would still allow restaurants that serve liquor.
“We need to move this discussion along, because we expect to present something to the City Council next month,” Hediger said. “In the meantime, we’re drawing up some language for the Planning Board to review that addresses drinking overall in the downtown, with some specific recommendations for the Oak Park neighborhood.”
He said he expects the Planning Board to schedule public hearings on Park Street nightclub issue after the Jan. 23 meeting.
