WILLIMANTIC (AP) – A man who told police he wasn’t going to jail is dead following a standoff and fire in the town of Willimantic.

Lt. Robert Young of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department says officers heard a gunshot from inside the trailer before it burst into flames on Wednesday. He says the occupant was 30-year-old Roberto Morales.

Young told WABI-TV that officers learned that Morales was living in a trailer and went there to arrest him. He says investigators are looking into how he died.

Morales had been at large for two years. He was wanted for burglary and theft, as well as possession of a gun by a felon.

Judge: Seizure of JFK boat wrong

BOSTON (AP) – A federal judge has ruled that the government had no right to seize and auction a sailboat once owned by John F. Kennedy.

The 22-foot sailboat was taken in 2004 by the government, which alleged a convicted marijuana dealer used drug-related profits to set up the purchase of the boat around 1996 by several investors.

But Judge William Young says the government failed to prove drug money was used to buy and refurbish the boat. He ordered the government to pay $125,000 to one of the boat’s co-owners, Dr. Kerry Scott Lane.

Kennedy raced the sloop as a teenager. He sold it in 1942, right before he shipped out to the Pacific in World War II.
