LEWISTON – Norman Winslow Turner, 75, of Oxford, died peacefully, Jan. 16, at Central Maine Medical Center with his wife and children at his side.

He was born in Brewer on June 21, 1932, to Sea Captain Everett Winslow Turner and Helen Black Turner. He was an only child and attended various schools in Maine and Vermont, graduating from Hinesburg High School in Vermont.

He joined the U.S. Navy and was in active duty during the Korean War. He remained in the Naval Reserve for 23 years and retired as chief petty officer. He worked as an engineer at Lake Champlain Transportation, North Haven, Island Ferry and as a merchant marine on oil tankers. He also worked as an instructor of marine engineering at SMVTI, and he enjoyed teaching the students. Norm loved the sea and working on the ocean; he was very well liked by his fellow shipmates.

He volunteered on the Charlotte, Vermont Fire Department, serving as assistant chief. He was a Mason of the 32rd Degree in the Washington Lodge 3 in Burlington, Vt., and he also served as chaplain and commander of American Legion Post 112 in Oxford.

In addition, he served as deputy sheriff in Vermont and Maine. He enjoyed gun collecting and was an auto enthusiast. He loved animals and had many pets throughout his lifetime. He especially enjoyed his cats in later years. He was a great storyteller and led a very interesting life. His family swears he could go to the surface of the moon and meet somebody he knew. He was an avid reader.

He was a good provider and family man. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Evelyn Lois (Avenengo) Turner of Oxford; his four children, Danny Turner of Parsonsfield, Steve Turner and wife, Julie, of Mechanic Falls, Susan Turner Lejonhud and husband, Dana, of Hebron and Scott Turner and wife, Curena, of Norway; 10 grandchildren; and several cousins.
