FARMINGTON – SAD 9 directors voted to suspend two high school students after separate disciplinary hearings Tuesday night. The students were accused of violating school conduct standards and school policies.

Both students were suspended 45 days and each were given conditions that must be met before re-admittance is considered, according to findings and conclusions listed in the meeting’s minutes.

In the first hearing, a student was cited for five significant infractions of the conduct standards set out in the 2007-08 student handbook, including three events of inappropriate contact with other students, the minutes stated.

The student handbook had been provided to the student and was reviewed by the student’s mother. The findings state the student directed offensive and profane language toward a teacher in class and in the school office. The student also violated the policies of SAD 9, which are also set out in the student handbook.

The board concluded that suspension of the student is appropriate for the peace and usefulness of the school.

The vote to suspend the student was 11-1, with Neil Stinneford of Weld opposed.

Re-admission conditions for the student are to demonstrate a seriousness of purpose in furthering his education by completing 45 school days of tutoring, attendance of all tutoring sessions, cooperation and a positive attitude and completion of school work assigned. The student must also get personal counseling for anger management.

In the second case, administration presented evidence of five different violations of school policies that department standards are set out in the 2007-08 student handbook under drug paraphernalia and conduct, the findings state.

The handbook also states that bringing dangerous weapons onto the school campus, whether intentional or inadvertent, constitutes a very serious violation of school policies.

The dangerous weapons in this case were knives, SAD 9 Superintendent Michael Cormier said, but couldn’t speak more on the issue.

The board concluded it was appropriate to suspend the student for 45 days with re-admission conditions.

The vote to suspend was 7-2 with Directors Mark Prentiss of Industry and Bob Pullo of Wilton opposed. Stinneford abstained from voting.

Those are 45 days of successful engagement in tutoring, attendance, cooperation and positive attitude, as well as completion of assigned school work.

The student must also present evidence of substance-abuse evaluation and counseling, if necessary, as well as evidence of personal counseling and a clean drug test within 45 school days.
