JAY – Selectmen directed the town manager to talk to the state to see if the commercial vehicle weigh station area could be moved so that it includes truck traffic heading up Route 133 from Farmington through Jay.
The Maine State Police Commercial Enforcement Vehicle unit has a designated spot on Routes 2 and 4 in Wilton where it sets up its portable weigh station to check heavy trucks at times.
Jay Selectman Rick Simoneau said Tuesday he has concerns about fully loaded logging trucks cutting across Hyde Road from Route 133 to Route 4 to get to the mills. The road was not built to handle heavy truck traffic, he said.
There has been discussion in the past about posting Hyde Road, Macomber Hill Road and Woodman Hill to heavy truck traffic year-round.
Town Manager Ruth Marden asked selectmen if they wanted to pursue the amendment to the town’s traffic ordinance and if so, do they want it on the June ballot.
Simoneau said that before anything is done, Marden should check to see if the state could move the weigh station back or do something else to include Route 133.
Simoneau said truckers are trying to avoid the weigh station and that is why they take Route 133.
Jay logger George Merrill said the route is shorter and some truckers are coming from New Sharon and other towns via that route.
Simoneau said he is concerned that a high school student driving a vehicle would meet a truck on Hyde Road, which is located near the schools, on winding turns and an accident would occur.
Marden said she will start with the Maine Department of Transportation to discuss the request.
