NEW VINEYARD – Franklin County deputies were following up leads Thursday, trying to track down the driver of a truck that lost its lumber Wednesday night on Route 27, killing a passing motorist.
The driver of the truck may not have known the wood had fallen, and kept driving south on the roadway, sheriff Lt. Niles Yeaton said.
The lumber struck two vehicles heading north, killing the man in the first vehicle and injuring a driver and a passenger in the second one. The second vehicle’s occupants were treated at the scene by paramedics and released.
The incident happened about three miles north of the Farmington line, police said.
Yeaton said the name of the man killed in the wreck was withheld Thursday because authorities are still searching for a family member to notify of the death.
The victim’s vehicle and the lumber that was lost were impounded at a New Vineyard garage awaiting a vehicle autopsy.
