LEWISTON – Time is ticking down for dog owners to get their pets registered with City Hall.
After Jan. 31, unlicensed dogs will incur a $15 fine for their owners. Another $25 late fine is added for each dog that remains unlicensed after Feb. 5.
City Clerk Kathy Montejo said that about 30 percent of the dogs registered in City Hall last year have not been given new licenses for 2008. That’s more than 600 dogs, she said.
Dog license fees are $11 for a male or female dog and $6 for a spayed or neutered animal. The 2007 licenses officially expired on Dec. 31.
Dog owners can receive a license for their dog at the Lewiston City Clerk’s Office, located at City Hall. Owners must show proof that the dog has a current Maine rabies certificate and proof that the animal has been spayed or neutered as well.
