SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Brother Oscar A.J. Aubin, S.C., (Brother Jogues), 89, of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, R.I., died Jan. 15, at St. Antoine Residence.
He was born in Blackstone, Mass., April 13, 1918, the son of the late Frederic Aubin and Marie-Jeanne (Lozeau) Aubin. He entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in August 1931 at St. Hyacinthe, Québec, Canada. He pronounced his first vows on Aug. 15, 1934 and his perpetual vows on July 11, 1940 at Mont-Sacré-Coeur in Granby, Québec. He completed a bachelor’s degree at the University of Montreal, Québec, in 1947, and also studied library science.
He ministered in education for 55 years as a teacher, director and librarian in schools conducted by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in New England and in Africa. He taught in Nashua, N.H., Sharon, Mass., Andover, Mass., Lewiston and Woonsocket, R.I. Beginning in 1948, he was a missionary in the countries of Lesotho and Zimbabwe for more than 20 years.
After his retirement from educational ministry, he trained in hospice care and pastoral care with the sick and elderly and was a rucharistic minister and visitor to patients in hospitals and nursing homes in Nashua, N.H., from 1990 to 1996. He celebrated his 70th anniversary of religious profession in October 2004. He retired to the Provincial House in Pascoag, R.I., in 1996.
He is survived by his sister, Margaret Aubin of New Hampshire; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; and his siblings, Cecile Bibeault, Brother Hervé Aubin, Anna Poirier, Alice Pelletier, Raymond Aubin, Brother Oliva (Hubert) Aubin, Roland Aubin, Camille Aubin and Berthe Salois.
