Dave Duguay may plan to campaign an as independent but he is a Republican to his core. The Republicans who worked hard to support him must be shaking their heads. Duguay has been a very loyal Republican despite coming from a part of Oxford County that is mostly Democratic. Is his change of heart possibly related to this?

In 2006, Duguay joined the other commissioners – both Republican – in their attempt to oust Treasurer Mary Ann Prue and replace her with one of their own, Norm Ferguson. Aspersions were cast against Prue and her record of public service. Voters were not fooled. She went on to win big despite the efforts of Duguay and Co. The commissioners also campaigned for the Republican’s sheriff candidate against Wayne Gallant.

Duguay’s effort to get the legislature to make county government “nonpartisan” was motivated by a tough campaign for re-election against Rep. John Patrick. This was seen for what it was by legislators and did not make it out of committee.

Republican domination of Oxford County government has not produced results. An active campaign in 2008 by the Democratic candidates may be partisan – but in the best sense of the word. The Democratic candidates for judge of probate, register of probate and county commissioner are distinguished in their community and public service. They have ideas and energy and will work to achieve efficiencies in county government and collaboration between towns and neighboring counties.

Sen. Bruce Bryant, Dixfield
