WESTPORT, Conn. – Alfred Oestrich, M.D., of 230 Saugatuck Ave., Unit 20, Westport, CT 06880, passed away on Jan. 1, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Hanau, Germany, on June 27, 1911, the son of Baruch and Babette Spies Oestrich. After studying in Heidelberg, he left Germany for the University of Nancy in France. He continued and received his medical degree from the University of Basel, Switzerland.

He immigrated to the United States in 1937, and worked at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston for one year as a medical assistant, then as an intern at the Rumford Community Hospital, where he established his practice.

During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Medical Corps and was sent to Europe, where he served as battalion surgeon and participated in the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes section. He received the Combat Medical Badge and the Bronze Star and was discharged with the rank of captain.

He re-established his practice until his retirement in 1984, then moved to Westport, Conn., to be closer to his family. He was a beloved and dedicated physician.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Rosi Markus Oestrich; his devoted sons, Charles Oestrich, M.D., of Westport, Conn., and Leonard Oestrich of Washington, D.C.; his brother-in-law, Walter Markus of New York; and many dear cousins and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at Riverside Memorial Chapel in New York City with Rabbi Allan Schranz officiating, followed by burial at Cedar Park Cemetery in Oradell, N.Y. Shiva was observed at the family home in Westport, Conn.
