PASCOAG, R.I. – Brother Louis R. Larivée, S.C., (Brother Celestin), of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, R.I., died Wednesday, Jan. 16, on his 99th birthday, at Bayberry Commons Nursing Home in Pascoag, R.I.
Born on Jan. 16, 1909, in Central Falls, R.I., he was the son of the late Albert Larivée and Amanda (Hémond) Larivée.
Brother Louis entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in March, 1924, at St. Hyacinthe, Québec, where he pronounced his first vows in 1926 and his perpetual vows in 1932. Brother Louis completed Teaching Diplomas from the Quebec Education Department in 1930 and 1931.
Brother Louis’ ministry included work as teacher, principal, secretary, cook, maintenance worker, and driver in various Catholic schools in the Province of Québec and New England, including Woonsocket, R.I., Nashua, N.H., Central Falls, R.I., Sharon, Mass., Harrisville, R.I., Lewiston and Biddeford, Maine, Andover, Mass., and Pomfret Center, Conn.
Brother Louis was known for his constant smile and his infectious laughter in completing all of his assignments.
Brother Louis retired in 1991 to the Provincial House and had resided at Bayberry Commons since 2004. In 2006, he was recognized on the 80th anniversary of his religious profession. He was the oldest living member of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in the world at the time of his death.
Survivors include his brother, Gerard, of Pawtucket, R.I.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Antoinette, Brother Pierre-Celestin (Wilfred), Leda, Paul and Claire Delore.
