AUGUSTA (AP) – Maine State Fire Marshal John Dean is calling for a ban on novelty cigarette lighters that look like toys.

Dean displayed more than a dozen of the lighters, some of which looked like a toy camera, baseball bat, tractor and motorcycle, during a news conference Tuesday at the State House. He says the lighters were purchased over the past year in Maine.

Attending the news conference was a 6-year-old West Paris boy who was burned around his eye when he grabbed one of the lighters from a convenience store shelf.

Dean says two Arkansas boys were killed in a fire started last year by a lighter shaped like a motorcycle. A public hearing on the bill is scheduled today in Augusta.
