AUBURN – Clarence Hammond, 83, of Lisbon Falls, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Androscoggin Hospice House.
He was born in Lisbon Falls, March 24, 1924, the son of Arthur and Olive Pettengill Hammond. He was educated in Lisbon Falls schools and attended Lisbon Falls High School, where he lettered in football for four years.
After high school, he entered the U.S. Army serving during World War II from March 3, 1943 through Jan. 10, 1946. On Oct. 22, 1955, he married the former Katherine Donovan. She died Nov. 10, 2000. Together they made their home in Lisbon Falls, where they raised their beautiful family.
He was employed for many years at area woolen mills and also worked for 10 years at Bath Iron Works, where he retired in 1985. He enjoyed hunting and fishing at his camp at Dallas Plantation.
He was a member of the Emilien Hamann DAV Chapter 11 in Lewiston, the Nelson-Conley Post 66 of Lisbon Falls, the Heritage Foundation and the Council for Inter American Society, the Republican Presidential Task Force and the Law Enforcement Alliance of America.
He is survived by his son, James C. Hammond of Smyrna, Ga.; his niece, Shirley Pelkey and her husband, Leslie, of Lisbon Falls, who became his caregivers; niece, Patricia Weeks and her husband, George, of Gorham; nephews, Richard Roberts and his wife, Beverly, of Florida, and Vic Anderson and his wife, Belinda, and Archie Anderson of Texas.
He was predeceased by his wife, Katherine; his daughter, Cynthia in July 1982; and his sisters, Laura Roberts Clark and Marion Anderson.
