LAKE RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (AP) – Suffolk County police might want to call in the Hazzard County sheriff for this case: They’re looking for whoever stole a replica of the car made famous in the television show “The Dukes of Hazzard” from a Long Island body shop.

The 1969 Dodge Charger, painted to resemble the fictional Duke cousins’ trusty General Lee, was found abandoned a few miles from the shop Thursday morning. Owner Rob Heller says he “wanted to cry” when he heard the car had been stolen and was relieved to get it back.

Suffolk County Police Department spokesman Sonny DiStefano says someone broke into a Lake Ronkonkoma body shop and took the car. The theft was reported Wednesday night.

The orange Charger has a Confederate flag on its roof and the number “01” on the side, just like the car that became a character in its own right on the 1979-1985 show.
