I was pleased to see the Sun Journal article on Bowdoin’s revitalized museum of art (Jan. 23). A visit there is always an educational and pleasurable experience.

By now, the author’s past art history students at Catherine McCauley High School have forgiven her the error of confusing Syria with Assyria in describing the reliefs. After all, the history of art encompasses the world, and her expertise may well be in another area or time.

However, her colleagues in journalism may be less charitable. The correct label of Assyrian is noted under the photo of the reliefs, but the written comments describe them as Syrian.

Spellcheck can’t be counted upon for everything.

I agree, this is a small point, but it underscores our national lack of concern for details in a part of the world where a greater degree of knowledge would have been helpful in the recent past.
